ABSTRACT
Over recent years, the management and treatment of people with personality disorders has become a major issue in both non-forensic and forensic mental health services. In 1998, Michael Stone was convicted of murdering Dr Lin Russell and her 6-year-old daughter, Megan, and attempting to murder Megan's 9-year-old sister, Josie. 1 During his trial it was revealed that he had sought help from a forensic mental health service, but help was not forthcoming because Stone was diagnosed as suffering from an untreatable personality disorder. Although Stone could have been treated as an outpatient, under mental health legislation a person suffering from a personality disorder needs to be considered treatable to permit admission to hospital.
