ABSTRACT

The first requires students to focus on the writing topic prompt and documents their understanding. The second transitions their focus from the prompt to a plan for their first draft. To help students develop a sense of what makes a good writing topic, provide model writing topic prompts every time they write. On the Writing Cycle Log for Student Self-Check, students log the modes of writing for their first three first drafts and nothing more. They leave the "Description of Topic" blank until they have written their first drafts. Once they have completed first Draft, prompt them to return to enter the "Description of Topic" based on their individual first draft. Of the several who raise their hands, select two to share their responses aloud to the entire class. For example, the teacher would say, "Lakisha and Won Mo, just say 'topic' and read your first sentence, 'audience' and read your second sentence, and so on.
