ABSTRACT
LD research should embrace ordered procedures and enhance understanding. Despite the large body of LD research that has been produced, LD remains many things to many people, with no unified perspective having come to the fore. Significant understanding has been achieved for particular facets of LD (e.g., attention, memory), but these pieces have not coalesced into a larger comprehensive description. Consequently, the knowledge about facets of LD has remained isolated and independent, providing only a fragmented view of LD. We argue in this chapter that this is because of the nature of the research process in LD: Instead of enhancing understanding, it has limited understanding. The present research process is effective only for investigating narrow aspects of LD and is not compatible with understanding LD in its totality.
