ABSTRACT

Good communication means having the impact we intended to have, that is, Intent equals Impact. The X-Generation yearns for managers who are straightforward and apolitical. Members of the X-workforce need structure as well as room to breathe and make on-the-job decisions. In essence, Direct Communication serves as a check and balance on Necessary Freedom. This benefits both managers and X’ers alike. Direct Communication for X’ers, meanwhile, keeps them goal-directed, motivated, and implicitly on task. Regarding the specifics of Direct Communication, managers can equip X’ers with a sample copy of the employee performance appraisal form for their company and go over the process with them. The role of X’ers in the Direct Communication process is to ensure that it actually happens. The Naked Contract is a simple tool for spelling out Direct Communication with the X-workforce.
