ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the orations of Cyrus and the oration of Chrysantas. Cyrus said that he is certain that if they dissolve their army, their state shall be feebler, and their enemies shall be again stronger. When all the things were spoken, Cyaxares rose up, and said, they were ready so to do. Gadatas and Gobryas both said they would defend their holds, where their confederates should determine that they might be helpful to their friends. Cyrus asked everyone to provide such things as they had used, such as engines to beat down the enemy's holds, and workmen to build fortresses for themselves. Cyrus had provided all things for the war. And was not only studious for the good doing of his confederates, but also moved emulation among his friends, that they might show themselves most clean in their armor, lusty on horseback, and painful in labor.
