ABSTRACT

Jo Berry and Patrick Magee fi rst met in late 2000, six months after Pat’s release from prison. They met again shortly after, and then at intervals over the years that followed. The fi rst meeting was private but at their second meetings they allowed a fi lm crew to record them talking together, with a view to making a documentary. The fi lmed conversation took place after a private meeting and covered some of the same ground. Jo Berry sat next to Pat Magee on a sofa, and the two talked as they wished, wandering across any topics they wanted to cover. The only scripting for this conversation was a poem that Jo had written several months before to express her feelings and that she wanted to read aloud to Pat. The conversation is calm but at points clearly painful. Both Jo and Pat tell about diffi cult times and strong feelings; and each telling is acknowledged by the other.
