ABSTRACT

The preceding Chapters have all been written without reference to the balance of payments, commercial policy, or any other financial or economic relations with the rest of the world. It is the main purpose of this book to discuss the domestic economic problems and policies of a country like the United Kingdom, that is to say, to consider how such a country can best put its own house in order. But it would be ridiculous to reach any conclusions about what was the best set of domestic policies for a country like the United Kingdom without considering them in their international setting. This we intend to do in this and the following Chapter.
