ABSTRACT
This chapter presents the treatment of a 5-year-old boy (Donald) with experience of early loss. "Donald's" early development unfolded in a chaotic environment. His young parents had not planned for a baby. They battled acrimoniously, separating in his first year. When Donald was almost 4 years old, he began to attend the Centre's nursery school. An appealing and intelligent child, he enjoyed a wide range of activities. The traumatic loss of his mother compounded the effects of Donald's earlier experience. He was offered non-intensive psychotherapy to help him to cope with the effects of that loss and, in particular, to help him to be aware of and bear his feelings. The concerns that Donald expressed within treatment were being manifested in his school and home life. The concerns that Donald brought into treatment around the first and second holiday breaks gave a clear indication of developmental moves.
