ABSTRACT
One morning in preschool, four-year-old Keisha is baking a birthday cake for her baby doll along with her best friend, Zoe. They have been absorbed in conversation for about 15 minutes. When their teacher, Veronica Adams, checks in with them, Keisha announces that she has a story to tell. Mrs Adams has her notebook in hand and writes down Keisha’s words as she offers them in phrases. ‘The wolf says, – “I will huff – and I will puff – and I will blow your house down”.’ Mrs Adams reads this back to her and asks, ‘Anything else?’ Keisha says no and goes right back to stirring a pot of beads and blocks, her cake ingredients.
