ABSTRACT

Literary translation criticism and even literary translation theory in China have stepped on a new road. The discussion of the Chinese translation of Le Rouge et le Noir has provided a certain inspiration for the circle of literary translation. The greatest inspiration lies in that it has demonstrated that literary translation criticism, including literary translation theory, has no the either-or way of universal standards. However, translation has its particularities, which present a set of contradictions, such as the contradiction between form and meaning, creation and imitation, among others. In China, the earliest time of literary translation can be traced back to the Six Dynasties (AD 222—589). In addition, there has been a century since the beginning of systematic Chinese translation of foreign literature. The complexity of translation lies in its very complex network of various relationships, in which every knot must be considered.
