ABSTRACT

This chapter describes meteorological features of the last long drought period during the 20th century. Precipitation distribution is one of the basic identifiers of drought occurrences in a given region. However, the distribution of additional meteorological elements should also be taken into account in order to describe the degree of drought. Particular years, months or successive months with insignificant precipitation, that is periods of atmospheric drought, are not uncommon events in the country and can even be considered as normal climatic characteristics of Bulgaria. The 1944 autumn was also dry, making the total drought duration approximately 12-15 months. The cyclone center over the Scandinavian Peninsula additionally influenced drought conditions in the country. In general, agriculture in the country, especially crop growing, was negatively affected by drought conditions in 1994. In 1945, precipitation amounts were especially low from January to November in most regions of the country.
