ABSTRACT

Biological factors may play a major part in the onset of depression. Even when there are obvious stressful events causing the depression, it may be advisable for the client to seek their doctor's advice concerning medication. The client will need to keep taking medication for a few months after getting better. Their pharmacist may also be able to give them advice about their medication. Most medication now comes with a leaflet describing the medication, side effects, usual dose range and instructions for taking it. Sometimes the client may experience a discontinuation syndrome if they stop these medications abruptly. The drugs may disturb the client's sleep, in which case taking them earlier in the day will help. The client needs to check with the chemist when buying such medicines that they are safe to take with MAOIs. The client should discuss any concerns their doctor, as the monitoring of this drug needs extra care.
