ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a small set of concerns or movements in education and demonstrate how the Dual Objective aligns with each one. Charles Dickens' famous dictum, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" certainly holds true for the educational landscape. Society is divided on a host of issues and education is at the center of many social and economic analyses. Education is expected to bridge international gaps in understandings, language, and communication. Traditionally structured education lacks the experiential base that puts globalized learning in a relevant, personal, real, and individualized context. The Partnership for 21st Century Learning recognizes that all learners need educational experiences in school and beyond, from cradle to career, to build knowledge and skills for success in a globally and digitally interconnected world. The Dual Objective involves the inclusion of dual educational objectives incorporating both content knowledge and non-academic skills.
