ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a detailed description of the Dual Objective Model of Cooperative Learning (CL), and introduces the reader to several cases of teachers experimenting with its implementation. It offers a culminating question and answer session built on personal teaching experience coupled with the experiences of colleagues who have implemented the model in their practice. The Dual Objective has been designed for teachers who seek to help teenagers develop their ability to show desirable life skills, demonstrate social-emotional competence, and/or utilize powerful Habits of Mind and simultaneously help them master the complex conceptual content of the discipline. The proficient teacher employing the Dual Objective Model plans and executes CL learning experiences using a process/product framework. Because of the greater cognitive gain associated with CL and because many affective skills demand a collaborative structure the Dual Objective fits perfectly as a variant of the CL approach.
