The dynamics of belief and its relation to the social system

In Chapter 3 we saw that the nature of religious belief differs greatly between individuals. Here we consider the dynamic nature of religious beliefs and religious systems. Any one religion is liable to change over time, and religions differ in the extent to which they are codified, according to whether they depend on revelation, and in the extent to which they are specific to a particular social group.
