Dynamics of church-state relations in Ukraine and the military conflict with Russia book
ABSTRACT
The chapter explores the legal and political dynamics of church-state relations in Ukraine during the Russian-Ukrainian conflict since 2014. The author demonstrates that the conflict triggered several changes in relations between temporal and spiritual authorities with regard to the military and national-security-related areas and thus contributed to the general shift in Ukraine to a more cooperationist church-state system. This shift moves Ukraine closer to the church-state approaches employed by other post-Soviet Orthodox-majority countries, including de facto or de jure multi-tier system of religions and state favoritism towards the national Orthodox church. However, due to several political and social reasons, these tendencies are still significantly milder in Ukraine than in Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Russia.
