ABSTRACT
A brain-based condition that makes it hard to make sense of numbers and maths concepts. The most common problem is with number sense. Symptoms of dyscalculia in foundation stage such as, it has trouble learning to count, especially when having to give each object in a group a number, has trouble recognising number symbols. In primary age, it has trouble recognising numbers and symbols, and has a trouble writing numerals clearly or putting them in the correct column. In secondary age, it has struggles to apply maths concepts to everyday life, including money matters such as estimating the total cost, making exact change and figuring out a tip. MRI studies at Georgetown University showed that in children with dyslexia the right side of the brain was heavily involved in both subtraction and addition. There was no difference in how well dyslexic and non-dyslexic pupils performed, just that they were using a different brain strategy.
