ABSTRACT

Humans attitude towards food is a major factor in whether people choose to make an effort to eat healthily, or just see eating as a refuelling exercise, to be got over with as quickly and conveniently as possible so people can move on with life. People require a range of both micro- and macronutrients for repair and reproduction. Micronutrients include vitamins and a range of 20 or more elements from iron to iodine for essential metabolic functions. However, most of the human body is composed of just four elements: oxygen, carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen. These elements, along with a small amount of sulphur, make up the three macronutrients we require, carbohydrates, fat and protein. Insulin also stimulates the liver to remove blood sugar and store it as glycogen, in the muscles where it can be quickly converted into glucose for energy; glycogen is also stored in the liver itself.
