ABSTRACT
Epiphytic communities reside on plant surfaces (phylloplane), not within plant cells. Fungal epiphytes are of particular interest due to their interactions with the host plants, with other microbes and with the atmosphere. Scientists studying interactions with plants functionally classify phylloplane fungi as commensals, mutualists, or pathogens.
