ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we provide a comparative review of the core of the audiovisual industry between the European Union (EU) and Latin America. We consider the film industry and television. From an economic point of view, it could be distinguished between the telecommunications infrastructure required to distribute services, the receiving equipment, and contents, which are demanded by consumers. Hence it is useful to consider separately agents as the rights holders, which comprise sports, music labels, events, artists, etc., content producers, aggregators, which in the case of TV would generally be broadcasters and operators, distributors which use all of the different technologies or networks, and retailers (Buigues and Rabassa, 2007). Both industries include two separate sub-sectors, one of which is in charge of the content production, while the other acts as a hardware distribution network, ensuring that goods and services reach their audiences.
