ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 focuses on the economic and material organisation of shared living. We explore the ways in which the legal basis of occupancy exerted a strong influence on the nature of relationships between sharers. We then consider how households organised themselves economically, before considering how material objects were utilised within shared households. The practices of sharing which emerged in different shared contexts, ranging from highly individualised practices through to more collective approaches to household organisation, had a critical role in shaping the broader ethos of the household.
