ABSTRACT

Animal production systems have been considered sources of environmental pollution. The complexity of this problem of animal production and environmental impacts exists because of two factors: first, the diversity among and within species production systems; and second, the range of environmental end points affected through animal production. There is increasing concern about the impact of animal production systems on water and air quality. There are multiple aspects of water quality that range from nutrients and pathogens, while air impacts cover particulates, odors, ammonia (NH3), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and greenhouse gases. The emission of these pollutants from animal production facilities is not uniform, nor is there a consistent emission even within a production facility.
