ABSTRACT

Genetic or transgenic modification of plants means the introduction of strange/foreign DNA in the plant genome to express new/changed plant properties. Apart from higher tolerance or resistance [genetically modified crop (GMC) of the first generation], changing of composition (more amino acids, fatty acids, mineral, vitamins, nutrient precursors, higher bioavailability of nutrients, etc.), or lower contents of undesirable substances (GMC of the second generation), or a more efficient use of limited natural resources such as water, fuel, phosphorus[1] are important aims of genetic modifications in the future. Whole plants, parts of plants, conserved products (e.g., silage, hay), or by-products of industrial processed GMC are available for animal nutrition.
