ABSTRACT
This entry presents a brief history of artificial muscles, followed by an overview of the shape memory alloys, polymer-type artificial muscles, and electrical activation of PAN artificial muscles through increasing the conductivity of PAN fibers. The history and properties of ionic polymer-metal composites in artificial muscles are also discussed. It concludes with a brief discussion on liquid crystal elastomer artificial muscles.
