ABSTRACT

Melt extrusion technology plays a vital role in the health care sector, supporting the production of a range of products, including stents, tablets, and injectable depot systems. The design of such systems using extrusion is achieved through the combined engineering of composition and extrudate geometry, allowing for unique release profiles not obtainable with conventional drug product manufacturing technologies. This entry reviews the basic formulation design concepts for the production of solid dispersions using melt extrusion, with a particular focus on oral drug delivery applications. Also covered within the text are application case studies using melt extrusion technology for the production of enabled formulations, controlled release products, foamed materials, and directly shaped products.
