ABSTRACT

Wind energy is fast becoming the most upgraded replacement to conventional sources of electricity. Wind, being ever present, provides a considerable range and endless supply of power for wind turbines, which are now found in most parts of the world. Today, wind energy has emerged as a renewable energy source that possesses a huge power generation capacity. Besides being environmentally sound, it comes with a couple of direct benefits to humans, one such advantage being that the use of wind energy can reduce electricity bills since wind is free, and, thus, after the initial installation payment, energy costs are minimal. This entry explains the horizontal axis turbine and defines all the internal and external parts of this turbine. The direction of the wind, power taken from the wind, and classifications according to the turbine's blades are discussed.
