ABSTRACT

Against a background of unprecedented technological advances and major changes in the way that people are leading their lives, this entry traces the growth and development of U.S. “Cyberspace Law” over the course of its first two decades (1990–2009). After addressing the different ways the field has been viewed in both the legal community and in academia generally, and after exploring the different conceptualizations of “cyberspace” that have emerged during this era, the entry provides an overview of highlights and milestones in both the courts and the legislative bodies. Major cases and statutes are identified, and the concurrent transformative developments in the online world are referenced throughout.
