ABSTRACT
Society created the library in response to individual, community, and national needs for memory and self-understanding. The development of the library as an institution follows the story of literate humankind and facilitates the telling of the human story in multiple languages and cultures. The library documents growth in intellection and other changes in the human condition. It preserves resources for those of minority as well as majority opinion, ensuring preservation and access for the unorthodox in human affairs. The library respects the full range of human interests and creates networks of resource sharing and international cooperation on behalf of reader interests.
