ABSTRACT

The advent of global civil society has highlighted the importance of the nongovernmental organization as a factor in the development of the information society. Understanding this phenomenon is essential for those interested in the dissemination of information surrounding various actors in civil society. Here we define the nongovernmental organization, discuss the different types of nongovernmental organizations and the areas in which they are active. The development of these organizations is discussed as well as future scenarios. Most importantly, the place of these organizations in information society, and interaction of the organizations with libraries, archives, and others in the pursuit of free and equitable access is explored.
