ABSTRACT

The objective of this entry is to explore the fundamental nature of knowledge management by examining relevant definitions, concepts, instruments, and strategies. It also reports on the development of the International Council on Knowledge Management (ICKM). ICKM is a nonprofit informal grouping of academics and practitioners that started in 2004 in Singapore with the launch of the first international conference on knowledge management. The tension between practitioners and academia is neither new nor limited to the field of knowledge management. The ability to bring these communities together will not only bridge the gap between the two worlds but also create the environment needed for the development of any discipline.
