ABSTRACT

Created in 1978 at the suggestion of Congress, Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. (CCC) is a not-for-profit organization that was established by representatives of publishers, authors, and content users. Their goal was to provide a single clearinghouse through which copyright holders could voluntarily offer centralized permissions to use text-based copyrighted works. CCC’s mission is to create innovative licensing solutions for the seamless sharing of knowledge. Since its founding, CCC has created and expanded the markets and systems that facilitate content reuse and the distribution of royalties to publishers and authors around the world.
