ABSTRACT

Disaster planning is the ongoing process by which cultural institutions (libraries, museums, archives, etc.) seek to prevent loss of collections using data gathered to identify and mitigate risks; prepare and revise the written Disaster Plan; and train staff in response procedures.This entry briefly discusses disasters of the last few decades, which have led to today’s understanding of disaster planning. The majority of the text discusses the major components of a disaster plan and the requisite steps for achieving an effective plan.
