ABSTRACT

Network management includes activities related to the design, construction, and operation of communications networks, which are performed by a network management organization. Network management is inherently a distributed activity because a network includes equipment distributed across multiple locations. Network management work is described in terms of the five dimensions of network management as defined by the International Standards Organization: fault, configuration, performance, accounting, and security management. Network management work is further described as a melding of design and real-time supervisory control work, depending upon effective information management and coordination of activities within the network management organization and with external organizations, including customers, peer organizations, and equipment and service providers.
