ABSTRACT

Theoretical approaches to place have been the domain of geographers, sociologists, psychologists, and, to some extent, museologists and academics with an interest in culture and heritage. This entry positions museums within these theories, in particular exploring how contemporary museum practices deal with place representation. Particularly relevant here are the changing nature of places caused by globalization and migration. Alternative approaches to exploring places enshrined in the philosophical approaches of ecomuseology are also discussed.
