ABSTRACT

School libraries have a comparatively short history, but their importance in the achievement of students in elementary, middle, and high schools makes them an essential component of the educational process. Most of the focus for this entry is the United States, and attention is given to the historical context, standards, and guidelines, changing education methodologies and their effect on the provision of school library services, technologies, and the relationship between school and public libraries. An introduction to the research points out the role of the school library in student achievement. A brief mention is made of the international perspective of school libraries in other parts of the world.
