ABSTRACT
The scope of this entry covers the development of national archives from antiquity to the present day, charting the changes in the understanding of what constitutes a national archive and the differences between countries throughout the world. It looks at the different positions of national archives within governments, at their varying responsibilities, the scope of their holdings, and the activities which they undertake.
