ABSTRACT
This entry examines major themes and questions that have been the focus of sociology of reading from the early years of the twentieth century to the present. Theoretical works dealing with the history and sociology of reading are discussed as well as recent large scale surveys of readers in France, Britain, and the United States. The concluding sections deal the issue of functional illiteracy in developed countries and with the global impact of the Internet on reading.
