ABSTRACT

The National Imagery Interpretability Rating Scale (NIIRS) is a task-based scale used for rating imagery acquired from various imaging systems. The NIIRS defines different levels of image interpretability by the types of tasks an analyst can perform with imagery of a given rating level. A scale constructed in this manner, provides a simple, yet powerful, tool for assessing and communicating image quality and sensor system requirements. This entry provides an overview of the National Imagery Interpretability Rating System, including its application and history.
