ABSTRACT
This entry reviews the material systems and technology platforms used to achieve all the basic building block elements of photonic integrated circuits, and their characteristics are contrasted. Each of the many material systems and each of the device technologies described has its advantages and disadvantages, with no clear winner across the board. The selection of a technology platform is dictated by the specific technical and economic requirements of each application.
