ABSTRACT

In every human endeavor, technology opens the door for new advancements to occur. Much of the progress in medicine over the last few years is due, in large part, to new laser technologies made available to clinicians and researchers. This expanding technological discipline in medicine contributes to a broad and a rapid expansion of less invasive surgical procedures. This entry provides a basic introduction to the use of lasers in medicine—what they are, how they work, and what they can do for the patient.
