ABSTRACT

Scattering of light occurs as an effect of heterogeneity in the optical properties of the medium. The scattering events in an optically turbid medium cause changes of directions of light propagation as well as attenuation of the light traversing the medium. In this entry, the basic information on scattering of light is presented. Scattering of light by single particles (spheres) with elastic, quasi-elastic, and nonelastic light scattering, as well as light scattering in an optically turbid medium are discussed.
