ABSTRACT

The main subject of this entry is the methods whereby modern visible band sensor systems can be characterized in the laboratory or test room. The purpose of such characterization is ultimately to determine the quality of the image produced by the system. The approach emphasizes minimum resolvable contrast (MRC) as a measure of imaging performance, commonly applied to television (TV) and low-light sensors and also to the human eye. The entry concludes with a short guide on the interpretation of visible sensor specifications.
