ABSTRACT
Optoelectronics is the most general term for any device, subsystem, or system in which light plays an essential role. Some of the technical areas that comprise the field of optoelectronics are displays, discrete optoelectronic components, optoelectronic integrated circuits (OEICs), and photonic integrated circuits (PICs). In this entry, we consider each of these in turn and then consider an example lightwave system that includes elements of all.
