ABSTRACT

This entry examines multispectral image processing, with an emphasis on terrestrial multispectral remote sensing processing. General transforms, including band ratios and principal components, are summarized and illustrated with examples based on an AVIRIS hyperspectral image. Color contrast enhancement techniques are discussed with examples from the same image. A variety of supervised and unsupervised image spectral classification techniques are summarized and contrasted, and the influence of feature extraction on this process is discussed. Finally, encoding and compression schemes that are useful in handling multispectral and hyperspectral imagery are described, with an emphasis on the JPEG-2000 standardization effort.
