ABSTRACT

To produce greater productivity in organizations, training is inevitably a part of the solution, although it is rarely the whole solution. Today's organizations need to respond to the competing demands for using training resources as scarce commodities, providing more broadly trained individuals, maintaining high-quality “basics” training, and new emphases in training such as self-training and greater reliance on certifications. A productivity approach to training asks tough questions about training quality, gaps, resources, and balance of basic and advanced learning emphases in constrained environments. Brief reviews of competency clusters, learning principles, and different types of training methods are discussed in this entry.
