ABSTRACT

Professor Barry Bozeman is probably best known in the field of public administration for his contributions to the advancement of public management. He played a foundational role in initiating the biannual public management research conferences, which was first held in Syracuse, New York in 1991. These biannual conferences served as a starting point for the Public Management Research Association, which today hosts multiple conferences around the world and publishes the Journal of Public Administration, Research and Theory. Bozeman's contributions to public administration have come in the form of research, academic leadership, and training and mentoring future practitioners and researchers. Bozeman's public administration research has focused primarily in three areas: 1) comparing public and private organizations (publicness); 2) developing a theory of red tape and research; and 3) advancing theory and research on public values. His current position is Arizona Centennial Professor of Technology Policy and Public Management and Director of the Center for Organization Research and Design at Arizona State University.
