ABSTRACT

This entry examines ways in which nonprofit and voluntary organizations impact civic engagement. There is much evidence to suggest citizens do engage in civic life through these organizations in various ways—in particular through volunteering, giving, participating as members, and advocacy. The outcome of this participation is often viewed as good for democracy; however, there is also evidence to suggest this engagement does not always lead to positive outcomes. In addition, changes in the broader political and social environment may affect the role nonprofit and voluntary organizations play in engaging citizens.
