ABSTRACT
This entry provides an overview of the development of military sociology, focused primarily on the United States. This is a diverse discipline, and we hope to present a representative sample of the diversity of this research in this entry. The entry begins by discussing classical sociological theory. The rest of the entry is organized around three levels of analysis: societal, organizational, and small groups. We conclude with a summary of policy impacts effected by military sociologists.
