ABSTRACT
This entry defines hazard mitigation (one function of the disaster management cycle), summarizes key programs, initiatives and strategies, and highlights commonalities among the concepts of mitigation, resilience, and sustainability. Lingering challenges are also discussed, as well as the importance of engaging broad and multiple publics and community stakeholders. The primary focus is on natural hazards, and related mitigation initiatives in the United States.
