ABSTRACT
The notion of “new social risks” refers to situations that are associated with possible welfare losses and that are typical of postindustrial societies. New social risks are the result of profound social transformations such as women's emancipation and the expansion of service employment. Exposure to new social risks today is a major source of disadvantage, also because, unlike traditional social risks, they are not well covered by existing welfare arrangements.
